Ben Jonker…realist by nature
There are many people that have a misconceived idea that artists are slightly touched, and they are half right, seemingly more so with bird artists.
When l paint birds, animals or portraits of people, especially kids, l seek my inspiration, not from my inner self, nor from emotions from my inner soul, but paint life from life itself. The task l set myself is to try and capture the true essence of the subject, in birds it’s the essence of a life form that can float on air, something that encapsulates the colour of flowers, the wings of the spirit and the ferocity of a lion. I try and freeze in a single frame the colours, shapes, patterns, energy, mystery and magic, the luminescence and the spirit that determines their existence. I see those qualities in all my subjects, not only in birds. Our lives, our being, our ways, the minutes of each day, our thoughts and our decisions are surrounded by exquisite detail in every form, be it in shape or colour.
I am a child of the land driven by an explorers spirit and by the enthusiasm for the life form as we know it in it’s many guises. I feel l must make it tangible, as real as to actual life sharing with humanity my God given talent.
